Daily Management System

What is DMS (Daily Management System) in Manufacturing?

Daily Management System (DMS) is a structured management approach used in manufacturing to ensure that process performance is controlled every day, deviations are detected immediately, and corrective actions are taken at the lowest possible level. Daily Management System is the operational backbone of Lean manufacturing.

Core Elements of a Daily Management System

1. Process-based KPIs and Standards

Each critical process is linked to:

  • clearly defined KPIs

  • standards and target conditions

  • visible deviation thresholds

KPIs must be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-related) and site-specific.

2. Visual Management

Visual boards and indicators make the current situation immediately clear:

  • what is on standard

  • what is off standard

  • what is under control

  • what requires escalation

Visual management ensures shared understanding between operators, supervisors, and managers.

3. Daily Audit Tours (Gemba Walks)

Managers conduct structured daily plant tours to:

  • observe real shop-floor conditions

  • verify understanding of KPIs and standards

  • confirm corrective actions

  • coach people where misunderstandings exist

The audit tour is not an inspection—it is a management and coaching process.

4. Reaction Rules and Escalation

For every critical deviation, DMS defines:

  • trigger conditions

  • escalation levels (typically green / yellow / red)

  • clear responsibilities by role

  • predefined reaction rules

This allows immediate response without waiting for meetings or approvals, ensuring speed and consistency.
